Meet the judges’ of the Ely Business Awards 2013

Duncan Margetts

Duncan is a Founding Partner of Interactive Business Dynamics ( He has extensive experience helping businesses ranging from SME’s to those with multi-million pound turnovers. He is an experienced commercial lender and has also lectured in the diverse field of management and finance.

He gained his management experience through running successful training and consultancy groups. Since 2000 he has worked as a business consultant and mentor working with private sector and third sector businesses throughout.

Duncan specialises in management, financial and strategic advice to businesses from a wide range of sectors including ICT, engineering, leisure, third sector, retail, service and rural. He has an established track record for raising business finance – both from commercial and grant funding sources.the UK.Duncan has written and published articles on business risk, planning, finance and diversification.

Ian Piper IanPiper


Ian works at Whiting & Partners, chartered accountants and business advisers, where he is the senior partner based in their office on the Angel Drove business park.

He specialises in helping individuals start, run and make a success of their own SME business.

He has his roots firmly based in Ely, where he grew up and has always lived. This has helped him understand the dynamics of the city and its businesses that he now spends his work time helping.

Julie Rogerson JulieRogerson

Julie Rogerson together with her husband Malvin established M Rogerson Ltd in Ely in 1982, with over 30 years experience in the Building Services Industry and emerging through 3 recessions in the early eighties, early nineties and late 2000 business life is always interesting.

The Mother of 3 Adult boys aged 29, 26 and 24 and a grandmother to 3 year old Zachary her personal life also hectic.

Julie in the 4th year of judging the business awards finds the competition and high standard of entrants a tough and challenging responsibility.

 Peter Watts FEBA Judges

Peter Watts has spent most of his working life in the industrial labelling and printing fields. He also ran his own business as a distributor in the UK until the early 2000s. His work with the Chamber involves networking activities, seminars and recruitment of new members.


Roger HetheringtonFEBA Judges

Roger is a Technology Adviser with the Enterprise Europe Network helping local businesses develop and exploit technology through partnerships with other businesses and academic organisations across Europe.  He has a wealth of experience helping many businesses in the area through sixteen years with Business Link and then running his own business providing business planning advice and expertise.

Previously Roger held senior technical and commercial management positions in the food industry with companies such as Mars Confectionery, McCormick Foods and Homepride contributing to many commercially successful innovations.


Graham Buckgrahambuck

Graham, an FSB member since 2002, is Director of Training of BlueTree Specific Skills and has always been fascinated by how things work and how to make them work better. From an early age he was forever taking things to bits and trying to improve them. This passion for making things work better has translated into Graham’s speciality: helping businesses achieve growth and excellence in their chosen fields.

Working with innovative organisations and getting them really focussed on being the best they can possibly be is what gets Graham out of bed in the mornings. This fits very well with Graham’s role as FSB Membership Advisor for Cambridgeshire and North Essex.


Harvey Bibby Harveybibby

Harvey is Marketing and Development Director at Grovemere Property Ltd. A qualified Chartered Surveyor and member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, he has over 15 years experience in helping businesses find commercial property tailored to meet their specific requirements.


John ThorrogoodJohnthorrogood

John is a Partner working in our Ely office and is a specialist in commercial, agricultural and residential property transactions. John qualified as a solicitor in 1982 and joined the firm in 1985.

His work encompasses sales and purchases of agricultural land, including farm sales and purchases, the sale and purchase of development sites; legal development of commercial industrial estates and the preparation of options, pre-emption and joint venture agreements. John also deals with partnership formation and franchise agreements as well as business start-ups.

John is a member of the Solicitors Benevolent Association and the Law Society Property section. He was a board member of Kings Forest Housing Association, and is currently Chairman of the Eric Drummond Mercer Trust, a charitable trust dealing with people with learning disabilities. John is a former Round Tabler and now a member of the Ely 41 Club (the ex-Round Tablers organisation). He is a member of Ely XT Limited, a charitable organisation responsible for organising the annual firework display in Cherry Hill Park, Ely. John was also the former Registrar to the Dean and Chapter of Ely Cathedral and was a former Governor of Soham Village College from 1996-2007, being Chair of the Governing Body from 1998-2007.

He is a keen cyclist and walker, having taken part in the National Three Peaks Challenge and having successfully trekked to Everest Base Camp


Gill Prangnell gillprangnell

Gill, Policy Adviser at Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, has enjoyed a varied career spanning education, training, local government policy, research and recruitment.
