Ely businessman shares the proceeds of go-green initiative

An Ely businessman who is hoping to make his Indian takeaway the most eco-friendly in the city is sharing the proceeds from one of his new initiatives with a charity.

Zahid Ahmed is the owner of the Saffron takeaway in Broad Street and has an impressive list of green credentials, with recycling giant AmeyCespa recently certifying all his packaging 100 per cent recyclable.

Last year, Mr Ahmed invested in a supply of ‘bags for life’ that he has made available to customers for £5.

With their special Saffron-branded bags, customers are able to claim a 10 per cent discount every time they collect an order, with the purchase price of the bag reclaimed in just two or three visits.

The special bags, made from jute, are biodegradable, fair-trade and the suppliers guarantee excellent working conditions for the workers who create them. The jute range is also supplied to Tesco.

On Monday, the proceeds from sales of the bags – amounting to £110 – was presented to Cancer Research representative Mark Constable outside the shop.
